National Indigenous Languages Day celebrates and honours the diverse Indigenous languages within Canada, recognizes the important role that language plays in sharing and connecting, and promotes the learning and use of language.
Learning about Indigenous languages is a step forward that each Canadian can take on the path to reconciliation and reclamation and a way to ensure Canada’s Indigenous languages flourish for generations to come.
In DSB1, students and educators learn, promote, and revitalize Indigenous language through three Cree language courses and one Anishinaabemowin language class at four secondary schools, and Cree language courses at three elementary schools.
“Cree language is starting to come to schools and now are becoming courses. That’s how powerful language is,” shares Abigail, a DSB1 student.
